Michigan Governor: Granholm 52%, DeVos 42%

November 07, 2006

- Jennifer Granholm is leading in the Great Lake State's gubernatorial race, according to the latest poll by Strategic Vision. 52 per cent of respondents in Michigan would vote for the incumbent Democrat, while 42 per cent would support Republican challenger Dick DeVos.

An early November poll by SurveyUSA gave Granholm a six-point edge over DeVos. Green Party candidate Douglas Campbell, Libertarian candidate Gregory Creswell and U.S. Taxpayers Party candidate Bhagwan Dashairya are also contending.

Granholm was elected in November 2002, defeating Republican challenger Dick Posthumus with 51 per cent of the vote. She had previously served as Michigan's attorney general.

In June 2005, Dick DeVos—former chief executive officer at Alticor and husband of former state Republican chairwoman Betsy DeVos—announced he would seek the Republican gubernatorial nomination.

The gubernatorial election will take place today. Since 1943, Michigan has had five Republican and four Democratic heads of government.
