Maine Governor: Baldacci 36%, Woodcock 30%

November 07, 2006

- Incumbent John Baldacci is leading in the Pine Tree State's gubernatorial race, according to the latest poll by SurveyUSA. 36 per cent of respondents in Maine would vote for Baldacci, while 30 per cent would support Republican Chandler Woodcock.

A late October poll by Critical Insights gave Baldacci a 17-point advantage over Woodcock.

Baldacci—a Democrat—was elected in the November 2002 election, defeating Republican challenger Peter Ciachette with 47 per cent of the vote. Baldacci took over on January 2003 from independent Angus King, who was ineligible for a third consecutive term in office.

Woodcock, a Vietnam veteran, has served in the Maine Senate since 2000. Green Party candidate Pat LaMarche and independents Barbara Merrill and David Jones are also contending.

On Jun. 13, Baldacci defeated website developer Christopher Miller in the Democratic primary with 76 per cent of all cast ballots. Woodcock received 38.6 per cent of the vote in a contest against former United States congressman David Emery and state senator Peter Mills.

The gubernatorial election will take place today. Since 1955, Maine has had three Republican, five Democratic and two independent heads of government
