South Carolina Governor: Sanford 57%, Moore 40%
- Incumbent Mark Sanford could win a new term as governor in South Carolina, according to the latest poll by SurveyUSA. 57 per cent of respondents in the Palmetto State would vote for Sanford, while 40 per cent would support Democrat Tommy Moore.
A late October survey by Clemson University gave Sanford a 27-point lead over Moore.
Sanford—a Republican—has acted as South Carolina's governor since January 2003. The former U.S. congressman defeated sitting Democratic governor Jim Hodges in the November 2002 election with 53 per cent of the vote.
Moore has served as one of South Carolina's state senators since 1980. He won the Democratic primary with 64 per cent of the vote, defeating Florence mayor Frank Willis and Columbia attorney Dennis Aughtry.
The election will take place today. Since 1951, South Carolina has had four Republican and eight Democratic heads of government.
