New García Victory Expected in Peru
(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Many Peruvian voters will support Alan García of the American Revolutionary People's Alliance (APRA) in next month's run-off, according to a poll by Universidad de Lima. 61.9 per cent of respondents would vote for the former head of state in the ballot. Ollanta Humala of the Union for Peru (UP) would finish second with 38.1 per cent.
The first round of the presidential election took place on Apr. 9. Humala finished first with 30.62 per cent of all valid votes, followed by García with 24.32 per cent, and Lourdes Flores Nano of the Popular Christian Party (PPC) with 23.80 per cent. The top two finishers will face-off in the second round, scheduled for Jun. 4.
On May 17, García said he would not travel much if he becomes president, saying, "Why so many summits? Peru needs its president here and not in a permanent tour of the world." The APRA nominee even hinted at selling the presidential plane, which cost an estimated $37 million U.S.
