Tories Bounce Back in Prince Edward Island
(Angus Reid Global Scan) - The governing Progressive Conservative party is once again the top political organization in Prince Edward Island, according to a poll by Corporate Research Associates. 50 per cent of respondents in the Canadian province would vote for the Tories in the next legislative election.
The opposition Liberal party of Robert Ghiz is second with 40 per cent, followed by the island's New Democratic Party (NDP) with four per cent.
Pat Binns secured a third consecutive term as the premier of Canada's smallest province after the Tories won 23 of the 27 Legislative Assembly seats at stake in the September 2003 election. 69 per cent of respondents are satisfied with Binns' performance, up 15 points since November.
Last month, Binns voiced his support for the child care policies of prime minister Stephen Harper, declaring, "What Mr. Harper has said is that by July he intends to have in place legislation in place that will pay $1,200 per child under six. So, for Prince Edward Island what that means, given that we have about 8,000 children who qualify, it's about 9.6 million additional dollars will start coming to Prince Edward Island."
