Support for Newfoundland Tories Close to 70%

March 08, 2006

(Angus Reid Global Scan) - The governing Progressive Conservative party holds an extremely high level of public support in Newfoundland and Labrador, according to a poll by Corporate Research Associates. 69 per cent of respondents in the Canadian province would vote for the Tories in a legislative election, up seven points since December.

The Liberal party—led by Gerry Reid—is second with 18 per cent, followed by the New Democratic Party (NDP) with 10 per cent. In October, NDP leader Jack Harris announced his resignation "effective on the selection of a new leader." The Newfoundland NDP will hold a leadership convention in late May.

Danny Williams became Newfoundland and Labrador's premier after the Tories won 34 of the 48 House of Assembly seats at stake in the October 2003 provincial election, ending more than 14 years of rule by the Liberal party.

Williams maintains a high level of public support in Newfoundland. 82 per cent of respondents are satisfied with his performance, up four points since December.

Earlier this month, Williams was invited to appear on CNN's Larry King Live to debate the seal hunt in Canada with former Beatle Paul McCartney and his wife, Heather Mills McCartney. Williams described the debate as "one of the most excruciating half-hours I've ever had in my life," and added, "I think they did themselves a disservice. The last thing I wanted to be was a hothead on an international network that portrayed Newfoundlanders and Labradoreans as being hotheads who inhumanely kill animals."
