Palestinians Divided Over Recognition of Israel

March 01, 2006

(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Adults in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank are split over one of the key decisions their new government is facing, according to a poll by the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion. 50.8 per cent of respondents believe Hamas should formally recognize the State of Israel, while 48.5 per cent disagree.

On Jan. 25, Hamas won the Palestinian Legislative Council election, securing 74 of the 112 seats at stake. The Israeli government believes Hamas is directly responsible for the deaths of 377 citizens in a variety of attacks, which include dozens of suicide bombings.

In February 2005, Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon announced a joint truce after a day-long meeting in Egypt. 80.5 per cent of respondents think Hamas must abide by the ceasefire, and 69.7 per cent believe the peace process with Israel must resume.

On Feb. 19, the Israeli government voted to stop the monthly transfer of close to $50 million U.S. to the Palestinian Authority, after the members of Hamas took control of the Palestinian Legislative Council. The cabinet also urged the international community to discontinue financial assistance to the Palestinian Authority, with the exception of humanitarian aid provided directly to the people.

On Feb. 26, Hamas lawmaker Mahmoud al-Zahar declared, "We do not consider the Israeli enemy as a partner. In winning the elections, we have defeated Israel. Why should we acknowledge them? The pressure comes from the United States, not from Arab countries."
