Ghiz’s Liberals Lead Governing PC in PEI
(Angus Reid Global Scan) - The opposition Liberal party of Robert Ghiz is still the most popular political organization in Prince Edward Island, according to a poll by Corporate Research Associates. 43 per cent of respondents in the Canadian province would support the Liberals in the next legislative election.
The governing Progressive Conservative party is second with 40 per cent—up one point since September—followed by the island's New Democratic Party (NDP) with nine per cent.
Pat Binns secured a third consecutive term as the premier of Canada's smallest province after the Tories won 23 of the 27 Legislative Assembly seats at stake in the September 2003 election. 54 per cent of respondents are satisfied with Binns' performance, up three points in two months.
Last month, Binns declared he would seek a fourth term in office, saying, "I have thought about running federally, but you know being a provincial premier is a pretty good job. I go to Ottawa once in a while as premier. That's enough." Canada will have a federal election on Jan. 23, 2006. Binns was mentioned as a possible candidate for the federal Conservative party.
