Majority in U.S. Wants Troops Out of Iraq
(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Many adults in the United States believe it is time for the coalition effort to end, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 53 per cent of respondents believe getting American troops home as soon as possible is more important than making sure Iraq becomes a peaceful nation enjoying freedom and democracy.
The coalition effort against Saddam Hussein's regime was launched in March 2003. At least 2,001 American soldiers have died during the military operation, and more than 15,200 troops have been injured.
On Oct. 25, U.S. president George W. Bush rejected calls for an immediate withdrawal from Iraq, saying, "The militant network wants to use the vacuum created by an American retreat to gain control of a country, a base from which to launch attacks and conduct their war against non-radical Muslim governments. (...) The terrorists regard Iraq as the central front in their war against humanity. And we must recognize Iraq as the central front in our war on terror." 54 per cent of respondents believe withdrawing U.S. troops would make things worse in Iraq.
