Angus Reid Global Monitor : Polls & Research
Panamanians Reject Abortion, Same-Sex Marriage
(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Many adults in Panama are against pregnancy termination, according to a poll by Dichter & Neira published in La Prensa. 89.4 per cent of respondents disagree with abortion.
In Panama, abortion is only allowed to preserve the health or life of the mother, in cases of rape and incest, and when the unborn child has medical problems.
In 2001, the Legislative Assembly passed the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. Some opponents contended that the provisions could lead Panamanian women to legally seek pregnancy termination on demand.
Panamanians are also opposed to the legal recognition of gay and lesbian partnerships. 78.8 per cent of respondents believe same-sex marriage should not be allowed.
