Ma and Siew Ticket Could Win in Taiwan
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The two candidates running for president and vice-president for the Kuomintang Nationalist Party (KMT) could win Taiwan's next election, according to a poll by United Daily News. 47 per cent of respondents would vote for former Taipei mayor Ma Ying-jeou and Vincent Siew.
Frank Hsieh of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and his potential running mate, premier Su Tseng-chang, are second with 27 per cent.
In a different scenario, 50 per cent of respondents would support the Ma-Siew ticket, while 23 per cent would vote for Hsieh and former vice-premier Yeh Chu-lan.
DPP member Chen Shui-bian was first elected president in 2000. In March 2004, he earned a second term in an election marred by controversy after an apparent assassination attempt.
On Jun. 23, Ma announced that Siew would be his candidate for vice-president. Siew is a former premier and former KMT vice-chairman. When launching his candidacy, Siew declared: "Taiwan's situation is tough and it faces challenges. We need someone with experience." Hsieh has not yet confirmed who will be his running mate.
Taiwan's presidential election is tentatively scheduled for March 2008.
