Republicans 2008: Giuliani 30%, F. Thompson 19%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - More Republican Party supporters in the United States believe Rudy Giuliani should become their presidential nominee, according to a poll by Opinion Research Corporation released by CNN. 30 per cent of respondents would vote for the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary, up five points since May.
Actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson is second with 19 per cent, followed by Arizona senator John McCain with 18 per cent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with nine per cent, and former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich with eight per cent. Support is lower for Texas congressman Ron Paul, Kansas senator Sam Brownback, Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo, and former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson.
Yesterday, Romney announced he is donating his own money to his campaign, adding, "One of the things I've had to do that you don't have to do if your name is McCain or Giuliani is introduce myself to people in Iowa and South Carolina and New Hampshire."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
