(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The Scottish National Party (SNP) is dominating in Scotland, according to a poll by Populus published in The Times. 38 per cent of respondents would give their local vote to the SNP in this year's election to the Scottish Parliament.

The Scottish Labour party is second with 28 per cent, followed by the Scottish Liberal Democrats with 15 per cent, and the Scottish Conservatives with 14 per cent.

In the regional vote category, the SNP is also in first place with 35 per cent, followed by Labour with 30 per cent, the Lib-Dems with 14 per cent, and the Tories also with 14 per cent.

In a 1997 referendum, voters in Scotland supported the creation of a legislative assembly with tax varying powers. The Scottish Parliament held its first session in 1999.

The election is scheduled for May 3. The Scottish Parliament has 129 members elected to four-year terms; 73 members are elected in specific constituencies, and 56 are elected through the additional member system.

Yesterday, SNP leader Alex Salmond expressed satisfaction with the numbers, saying, "This is the strongest position the SNP have ever gone into an election campaign. The SNP have the ideas, the policies and the ambition to build success for Scotland—to keep health care local, lower early year's class sizes, tackle crime, boost Scottish business, and ensure that the people of Scotland have the choice of independence in a referendum."
