Hillary Could Carry Connecticut in 2008 Election

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is the favourite Democratic United States presidential contender for voters in the Constitution State, according to a poll by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. At least 46 per cent of respondents in Connecticut would vote for Rodham Clinton in head-to-head contests against three prospective Republican rivals.

Rodham Clintion holds a two-point edge over former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, an eight-point advantage over Arizona senator John McCain, and a 28-point lead over former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.

In other match-ups, McCain is almost tied with Connecticut senator Chris Dodd, leads former North Carolina senator John Edwards by four points, and trails Illinois senator Barack Obama by five points.

In 2004, Democratic nominee John Kerry carried Connecticut's seven electoral votes, with 54 per cent of the vote. No Republican has won the Constitution State since George H. Bush in 1988.

Incumbent George W. Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next United States presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
