Switzerland's first nuclear power plant became operational in 1969. The country's five existing reactors provide 40 per cent of the country's electricity. In 2003, Swiss voters rejected a proposal to phase-out nuclear energy in a nationwide referendum.

In 2006, the Swiss Parliament ended the country's moratorium on building new nuclear power plants, and extended the operating life of the five existing reactors.

Last month, Swiss environment minister Moritz Leuenberger said the government was "considering" the construction of a new nuclear power station, as three of the existing reactors will have to be replaced by 2020.
