Angus Reid Global Monitor : Polls & Research
Dissatisfaction with Iraq War at 55% in U.S.
- More Americans think their federal government made a mistake in launching the coalition effort, according to a poll by the New York Times and CBS News. 55 per cent of respondents believe the United States should have stayed out of Iraq, up four points since September.
The coalition effort against Saddam Hussein's regime was launched in March 2003. At least 2,752 American soldiers have died during the military operation, and more than 20,600 troops have been wounded in action.
In December 2005, Iraqi voters renewed their National Assembly. In May, Shiite United Iraqi Alliance member Nouri al-Maliki officially took over as prime minister. 52 per cent of respondents think the Iraq war is not part of the war on terrorism, up six points in a month.
Yesterday, U.S. president George W. Bush discussed the coalition effort, saying, "I fully understand the American people are seeing unspeakable violence on their TV screens. These are tough times in Iraq. The enemy is doing everything within its power to destroy the government and to drive us out of the Middle East. (...) If we were to abandon that country before the Iraqis can defend their young democracy the terrorists would take control of Iraq and establish a new safe haven from which to launch new attacks on America."
