Georgia Governor: Perdue 51%, Taylor 38%
- Sonny Perdue is leading in the Peach State's gubernatorial race, according to the latest poll by Strategic Vision. 51 per cent of respondents in Georgia would vote for the incumbent, while 38 per cent would support Republican challenger Mark Taylor.
An early October survey by Rasmussen Reports gave Perdue a 26-point advantage over Taylor. Libertarian candidate Garrett Hayes is also contending.
Perdue—a Republican—has acted as Georgia's governor since January 2003. The former state senator defeated Democrat incumbent Roy Barnes in the November 2002 election with 52 per cent of the vote, becoming the first GOP member to head the state's government in 130 years.
Taylor has been Georgia's lieutenant governor since 1998, and had previously served as a state senator. He defeated state secretary Cathy Cox in the Jul. 18 Democratic primary with 52 per cent of all cast ballots.
The election will take place today. If no contender garners more than 50 per cent of the vote, a run-off would take place on Nov. 28.
