Nelson Reaches 60% in Florida Senate Race
(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Bill Nelson could earn a new six-year term as one of Florida's representatives to the United States Senate, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 60 per cent of respondents in the Sunshine State would support the Democratic incumbent in this year's ballot, while 33 per cent would back Republican Katherine Harris.
Nelson was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000, defeating Republican Bill McCollum with 52 per cent of the vote in a ballot to replace the retiring Connie Mack III.
Harris served as Florida's state secretary from 1999 to 2002. She presided over the highly contested 2000 presidential election, where weeks of recounts and court injunctions concluded in a 537-vote victory for Republican George W. Bush over Democrat Al Gore in the Sunshine State. Harris was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2002, and earned a new two-year term in 2004.
Support for Nelson increased by three points since April, while backing for Harris went up by six points.
Harris will face three rivals—retired naval officer LeRoy Collins Jr., former federal official Peter Monroe and immigration lawyer William McBride—in the GOP primary election scheduled for Sept. 5. Harris campaign spokesman Chris Ingram said the congresswoman "would have preferred not to have had a contested primary," but added, "With a tremendous base of support, we expect to be victorious in September and November."
The election is scheduled for Nov. 7.
