- (Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Republican John McCain could carry the Yellowhammer State in this year’s United States presidential election, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 51 per cent of respondents in Alabama would vote for the Arizona senator, while 36 per cent would back Democratic Illinois senator Barack Obama.

- (Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The Progressive Encounter - Broad Front (EP-FA) is gaining more public backing in Uruguay, according to a poll by Factum. 46 per cent of respondents would vote for the governing coalition of left-leaning parties in the next legislative election, up four points since March.

Spain’s Opposition Leader Gains Ground
- (Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Mariano Rajoy has gained a significant amount of popularity among Spaniards, according to a poll by Instituto Opina released by Cadena Ser. 43.3 per cent of respondents approve of Rajoy’s role as leader of the opposition Popular Party (PP), up 11.4 points since mid-June.

Half of Americans Would Drill in Alaska Refuge
- (Angus Reid Global Monitor) - More adults in the United States want to allow oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, according to a poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. 50 per cent of respondents favour the idea, while 43 per cent are opposed.

- (Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The Japanese government continues to disappoint most people in the country, according to a poll by Nikkei. 63 per cent of respondents disapprove of the appointed cabinet of Japanese prime minister Yasuo Fukuda, down one point since May.

Trust in Hong Kong’s Government Dwindles
- (Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Fewer people in Hong Kong are expressing confidence in the local administration while more are finding Beijing’s central government trustworthy, according to a poll by the Hong Kong University Public Opinion Programme. 61.9 per cent of respondents trust the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, down 4.4 points since February.

- (Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Most people in Austria think transport minister Werner Faymann is the right man to lead the ruling Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPO) into the next federal election, according to a poll by OGM. 59 per cent of respondents say Faymann is a more promising candidate than current chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer.

- (Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Two parties are practically tied in Slovenia, according to a poll by Ninamedia. 22.1 per cent of respondents would vote for the opposition Social Democracy (SD) in the next legislative election, while 20.6 per cent would support the governing Social Democratic Party of Slovenia (SDS).

- (Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Britain’s main opposition party continues to gain supporters, according to a poll by Communicate Research published in The Independent. 46 per cent of respondents would vote for the Conservative party in the next election to the House of Commons, up two points since mid-June.
