Utah: McCain 62%, Obama 23%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Republican John McCain could carry the Beehive State in this year’s United States presidential election, according to a poll by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. 62 per cent of respondents in Utah would vote for the Arizona senator, while 23 per cent would back Democratic Illinois senator Barack Obama.

Rhode Island: Obama 50%, McCain 30%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Democrat Barack Obama could carry the Ocean State in this year’s United States presidential election, according to a poll by Brown University. 50 per cent of respondents would vote for the Illinois senator, while 30 per cent would back Arizona senator John McCain.

Russia Friend, U.S. Foe for Belarusians
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The vast majority of people in Belarus count on Russia as their country’s greatest friend, according to a poll by Bashkirova & Partners. 82.1 per cent of respondents regard Russia as a friend or ally, followed by Ukraine with 35.3 per cent, and China with 24.3 per cent.

Malaysians Think Anwar is Innocent
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The majority of people in Malaysia think allegations of sexual misconduct against opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim are false, according to a poll by the Merdeka Center for Opinion Research. 55 per cent of respondents share this view, while 11 per cent think the charges are true.

German Conservatives Lead by 12 Points
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The Christian-Democratic Union (CDU) and the Bavarian Christian-Social Party (CSU) continue to dominate Germany’s political scene, according to a poll by Infratest-Dimap. 37 per cent of respondents would vote for the conservative parties in the next election to the Federal Diet, up one point since early August.

Russians Back Independent South Ossetia, Abkhazia
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Just days before the Russian government backed the independence of two breakaway Georgian regions, people in Russia were already in favour of the endorsement, according to a poll by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center. 71 per cent of respondents agreed that Russia should acknowledge the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Support for Australian PM Rudd Still Strong
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The popularity of Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd remains strong, according to a poll by Newspoll published in The Australian. 57 per cent of respondents are satisfied with Rudd’s job as head of government, down one point since early August.

Sarkozy’s Standing Improves in France
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - More people in France now regard Nicolas Sarkozy in a positive light, according to a poll by Ipsos published in Le Point. 44 per cent of respondents have a favourable opinion of their president, up five points since July.

Americans Would Increase Offshore Oil Drilling
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Most people in the United States are at ease with the idea of expanding their country’s capabilities to drill for oil and natural gas offshore, according to a poll by Opinion Research Corporation release by CNN. 69 per cent of respondents favour increased offshore drilling, and 51 per cent believe this activity would reduce the price of gasoline in the next year.
