Swedes Reject Troop Increase in Afghanistan
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - People in Sweden are not keen on sending more soldiers to Afghanistan, according to a poll by Sifo released by Sveriges Television. 36 per cent of respondents would maintain the current level of troops in Afghanistan, 37 per cent would withdraw all soldiers, and only 17 per cent would agree with boosting the contingent with a new deployment.

French Still Happier with Fillon than Sarkozy
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - France’s appointed prime minister continues to garner more popular support than the president, according to a poll by Ifop published in Le Journal du Dimanche. 55 per cent of respondents are satisfied with François Fillon’s performance, while 44 per cent feel the same way about Nicolas Sarkozy.

Few Americans Would Close Guantanamo
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Few adults in the United States want their president-elect to shut down a notorious detention facility, according to a poll by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. Only 29 per cent of respondents believe Barack Obama should close the Guantanamo Bay prison.

Martinelli Leads All Contenders in Panama
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Ricardo Martinelli holds a slight edge in the race to replace Martín Torrijos in Panama, according to a poll by Ipsos. 36 per cent of respondents would vote for the presidential candidate of Democratic Change (CD) in next year’s ballot.

Uruguayans Support Vetoed Abortion Bill
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The majority of people in Uruguay favour proposed legislation that would loosen existing restrictions on abortion, according to a poll by Factum published in El Espectador. 56 per cent of respondents agree with a bill that would allow women to request an abortion freely during the first 12 weeks of gestation, while 35 per cent disagree.

Palestinians Divided on Arab Troop Presence
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Many residents of Gaza and the West Bank disagree with a proposal to bring Arab soldiers into the Palestinian Territories, according to a poll by An-Najah National University. 52.9 per cent of respondents oppose an Arab troop deployment, while 44.2 per cent support it.

Noticeable Bounce for Brown in Britain
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Public support for British prime minister Gordon Brown has increased dramatically, according to a poll by YouGov. 41 per cent of respondents say Brown is doing well as head of government, up 21 points since August.

Italy’s Right Retains Majority Support
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Italian adults continue to express support for the governing coalition of right-leaning parties, according to a poll by Euromedia Research. 52.6 per cent of respondents would vote for the Italian People of Freedom Party (PdL), the Northern League (LN), or the Movement for Autonomy (MPA) in the next election to the Chamber of Deputies, up 1.1 points since July.

Russians Decry Government Work on Economy
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Most people in Russia are dissatisfied with their government’s handling of the national economy, according to a poll by the Yury Levada Analytical Center. 53 per cent of respondents think the administration of Dmitry Medvedev has managed unemployment, inflation and financial issues badly.
