Germans Would Clearly Pick Merkel Over Beck
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - If people in Germany had the choice of electing their federal chancellor directly, the vast majority would vote for incumbent Angela Merkel, according to a poll by Infratest-Dimap. 68 per cent of respondents would back the leader of the Christian-Democratic Union (CDU), while 14 per cent would choose Social Democratic Party (SPD) leader Kurt Beck.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd maintains a high level of public support, according to a poll by Newspoll published in The Australian. 68 per cent of respondents are satisfied with Rudd’s performance, down three points since late April.

Bush Approval Stays at 28% in U.S.
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Less than three-in-ten Americans offer a positive assessment of George W. Bush’s performance, according to two recent public opinion polls. In a survey by Gallup released by USA Today, 28 per cent of respondents approve of the way the American president is handling his job.

One-in-Five Scots Want Separate State
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Adults in Scotland hold differing views on their future, according to a poll by YouGov released by the Daily Telegraph. 38 per cent of respondents would vote to retain the Scottish Parliament but giving it greater powers, while 34 per cent would keep the existing legislature.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Public satisfaction with French president Nicolas Sarkozy appears to have stabilized after many months of plummeting numbers, according to a poll by Ifop published in Paris Match. 43 per cent of respondents approve of Sarkozy’s performance, up one point since April.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The majority of people in Ukraine are against their country joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), according to a poll by FOM-Ukraine. 54.9 per cent of respondents believe the country should not enter the alliance.

Germans Maintain CDU-CSU in First Place
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The popularity of Germany’s main conservative parties has remained stable this month, according to a poll by Forsa released by Stern and RTL. 37 per cent of respondents would back the Christian-Democratic Union (CDU) or the Bavarian Christian-Social Party (CSU) in the next election to the Federal Diet, down one point since mid-April.

Belarusians Assess Benefits of Independence
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Two-in-five people in Belarus think their country’s separation from the Soviet Union brought them personal benefits, according to a poll by the Independent Institute for Social, Economic and Political Studies (IISEPS). 43.1 per cent of respondents say they have won with Belarus’s independence, while 25.8 say they have lost as a result of it.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Turkey’s governing party draws the support of two-in-five voters, according to a poll by ANDY-AR Social Research Center. 41.1 per cent of respondents would vote for the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in the next legislative election.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Sweden’s coalition of centre-left parties is the most popular political force in the country, according to a poll by Synovate published in Dagens Nyheter. 56.4 per cent of respondents would support the Workers’ Party - Social-Democrats (S), the Left Party (Vp) or the Environmental Party - The Greens (MP) in the next general election.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Democrat Barack Obama leads Republican John McCain in the United States presidential race, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 47 per cent of respondents would vote for the Illinois senator in this year’s election, while 44 per cent would back the Arizona senator.

Fernández Still Ahead in Dominican Republic
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Most people in the Dominican Republic are planning to vote for the incumbent in this month’s presidential election, according to a poll by Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates. 56 per cent of respondents would back Leonel Fernández of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) in the ballot, unchanged since March.

Finnish Political Parties Remain Stable
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - People in Finland continue to support the country’s three major parties fairly evenly, according to a poll by Taloustutkimus released by YLE Radio News. 22.9 per cent of respondents would back the National Rally (KOK) in the next general election, 21.8 per cent would vote for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and 21.7 per cent would support the Finnish Centre Party (KESK).
