Britons Pick Brown Over Cameron on Economy
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Roughly half of people in Britain trust their prime minister and his chancellor of the exchequer to lead the country through economic hardship, according to a poll by Communicate Research released by the BBC. 47 per cent of respondents have more confidence in Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling to handle the current crisis.

Governing Liberals Trail Opponents in Denmark
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The conservative Left, Liberal Party of Denmark (V) is still trailing the country’s main opposition party, according to a poll by Catinét Research released by Ritzau. 26 per cent of respondents would vote for the Social Democracy in Denmark (SD) party in the next general election, while 22.4 per cent would back the Liberals.

President Torrijos Falls Below 50% in Panama
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Fewer Panamanians are satisfied with Martín Torrijos, according to a poll by Dichter & Neira released by TVN Noticias and Panamá América. 46.2 per cent of respondents rate the president’s performance as excellent or good, down 6.1 points since September.

Palestinians See No Way to Statehood
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Few Palestinians think they will see the establishment of their own state, according to a poll by An-Najah National University. 55.4 per cent of respondents doubt that current negotiations carried by Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas will lead to the creation of a Palestinian state on the 1967 occupied territories, while 36.3 per cent do think this is possible.

Americans Ponder Obama’s Next Move in Iraq
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Many adults in the United States want their president-elect to keep troops in Iraq until the situation is more stable and then begin to remove them without a fixed date for a full withdrawal, according to a poll by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. 56 per cent of respondents believe Barack Obama should follow this course of action.

Lead for Berlusconi Parties Narrows in Italy
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The right-wing alliance supporting Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi holds a smaller lead over its main rival, according to a poll by Ipsos Public Affairs. 45.1 per cent of respondents would vote for the Italian People of Freedom Party (PdL), the Northern League (LN), or the Movement for Autonomy (MPA) in the next election to the Chamber of Deputies, down two points since September.

Sky-High Numbers Continue for Russian Leaders
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Public support for both former Russian president Vladimir Putin and successor Dmitry Medvedev increased last month, according to a poll by the Yuri Levada Analytical Center. 86 per cent of respondents approve of the way Putin has handled his duties as prime minister, while 78 per cent are satisfied with Medvedev’s performance.

Likud Holds 12-Seat Advantage in Israel
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The rightist Likud party remains the dominant force in the early stages of Israel’s legislative contest, according to a poll by Geocartographia released by Israel Television. A prospective tally shows Likud could win 37 seats in next year’s election, while the governing Kadima would finish second with 25 mandates.

Lugo Enjoys High Support in Paraguay
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The new president of Paraguay is highly regarded by most people in the South American country, according to a poll by First Análisis y Estudios published in ABC Color. 60.1 per cent of respondents approve of the way Fernando Lugo has governed so far, while 31.4 per cent disapprove of his tenure.

Costa Ricans Reject Open Border with Nicaragua
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Most people in Costa Rica reject the notion of opening the border with Nicaragua in order to allow for the free traffic of citizens between the two Central American countries, according to a poll by CID-Gallup. 81 per cent of respondents do not want border officials to stop requesting a passport and a visa on either side.

Close Presidential Race Continues in El Salvador
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - There is no clear leader in El Salvador’s presidential race, according to a poll by Consulta Mitofsky released by TCS. 31 per cent of respondents would back Mauricio Funes of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), while 29.5 per cent would vote for Rodrigo Ávila of the governing conservative Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA).

Akufo-Addo Leads Rivals in Ghana

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The candidate from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is leading the race for Ghana’s presidency, according to a poll by Primary Research Associates. 50.5 per cent of respondents would vote for Nana Akufo-Addo in this month’s ballot.

Belarusians Ponder Electoral Body’s Independence
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - People in Belarus are split in their assessment of the Central Election Committee (CEC), according to a poll by the Independent Institute for Social, Economic and Political Studies (IISEPS). 46.9 per cent of respondents regard the CEC as an impartial agency guided by the rule of law, 31.3 per cent describe it as a pro-government operation, and 19.5 per cent believe it favours certain candidates.

Britons Object to More Troops in Afghanistan
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Almost half of adults in Britain are completely against enhancing their military commitment in Afghanistan, according to a poll by YouGov. 46 per cent of respondents say Britain should not send more troops to the war on terrorism under any circumstances, even upon request by United States president-elect Barack Obama.

Dutch Hail Obama’s Victory in U.S.
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The vast majority of people in the Netherlands received the election of Democratic nominee Barack Obama to the United States presidency with delight, according to a poll by Maurice de Hond. 80 per cent of respondents were glad or very glad to see Obama winning the ballot.
