(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Democrat Barack Obama holds the upper hand in the United States presidential race, according to a poll by TNS released by ABC News and the Washington Post. 49 per cent of respondents would vote for the Illinois senator in this year’s ballot, while 46 per cent would back Arizona senator John McCain.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd is preferred by the vast majority of people over opposition leader Brendan Nelson to occupy the country’s top job, according to a poll by Newspoll published in The Australian. 65 per cent of respondents say the Australian Labor Party (ALP) leader would make the better prime minister, while 14 per cent pick Liberal leader Nelson.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Democrat Barack Obama remains ahead of Republican John McCain in the United States, according to a poll by Zogby International released by Reuters. 47 per cent of respondents would vote for the Illinois senator in this year’s presidential election, while 40 per cent would support the Arizona senator.

New Zealanders Assess Emissions Trading Scheme

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - A third of adults in New Zealand welcome a government plan to introduce a national emissions trading scheme to curb climate change, according to a poll by DigiPoll. 34.2 per cent of respondents support the initiative, while 24.3 per cent oppose it. Two-in-five respondents have no strong feelings on the matter.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The vast majority of people in Colombia would accept a decision by Álvaro Uribe to run for a third consecutive term in office, according to a poll by Gallup published in El Tiempo. 74 per cent of respondents would agree with Uribe becoming a candidate in the 2010 election, while only 22 per cent disagree.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Many people in Spain think a strained economy is threatening their country, according to a poll by Real Insituto Elcano. At least 72 per cent of respondents think the rising costs of food and oil are an important menace to Spain, while 65 per cent believe a global economic slowdown represents a threat as well.
