(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The popularity of Japan’s government plummeted just before the prime minister announced his resignation, according to a poll by Nikkei. 29 per cent of respondents approve of Yasuo Fukuda’s appointed cabinet, down nine points since July.

Palestinians Would Vote for Abbas Again
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Most residents of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank would vote for Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas in the next presidential election, according to a poll by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research. 53 per cent of respondents would vote for Abbas, down six points since September 2007.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Felipe Calderón enjoys a high support rate in Mexico, according to a poll by Reforma. 62 per cent of respondents approve of the president’s performance, down two points since May.

U.S. 2008: Obama 48.8%, McCain 42.8%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Democrat Barack Obama is still leading Republican John McCain in the United States presidential race, according to a review of six voting intention surveys conducted over the past seven days. 48.8 per cent of voters would support the Illinois senator, while 42.8 per cent would support the Arizona senator.

Tight Legislative Race Continues in Austria
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The Social-Democratic Party of Austria (SPO) and the Austrian People’s Party (OVP) are practically tied, according to a poll by Gallup. 27 per cent of respondents would vote for the SPO in this month’s federal election, while 26 per cent would support the OVP.

Half of Canadians Decry Conservative Flyers
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Many Canadians were not amused by a series of flyers recently sent by Conservative party legislators, according to a poll by Angus Reid Strategies released by the Toronto Star. 49 per cent of respondents believe the mail-outs are inadmissible because they are campaign material, while 27 per cent believe the flyers are acceptable and meant to inform constituents about the government’s policies.

Americans Call for Action on High Oil Prices
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Most people in the United States want the government to take specific action to deal with rising fuel prices, according to a poll by TNS, ABC News, Stanford University and Planet Green. 78 per cent of respondents think the government should implement stricter fuel efficiency standards for cars.

Ecuadorians May Ratify New Constitution
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Support for a new constitution is increasing in Ecuador, according to a poll by Santiago Pérez Investigaciones y Estudios. 56 per cent of respondents would vote in favour of the new body of law in an upcoming referendum on its adoption—up six points since mid-August—while 23 per cent would vote against it.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Three-in-four adults in Germany would like to see Barack Obama become the next president of the United States, according to a poll by Forsa released by N-TV and Die Welt. 74 per cent of respondents prefer the Democratic candidate, while 11 per cent pick Republican John McCain.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Businessman Sebastián Piñera is currently a strong contender in the next race for Chile’s presidency, according to a poll by La Tercera. 35 per cent of respondents would vote for the member of the conservative National Renewal (RN) in next year’s ballot.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain are virtually tied in Florida, according to a poll by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, Inc. 45 per cent of respondents in the Sunshine State would vote for the Illinois senator in this year’s United States presidential election, while 44 per cent would support the Arizona senator.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The Netherland’s Christian-Democratic Appeal (CDA) continues to have strong popular support, according to a poll by Maurice de Hond. A prospective tally of the results of the next election shows that the ruling party would win 33 seats in the national legislature, unchanged since mid-August.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Australia’s governing party has a solid lead over the official opposition, according to a poll by Newspoll published in The Australian. 45 per cent of respondents would vote for the Australian Labor Party (ALP) in the next election to the House of Representatives, down two points since early August.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Most people in Hong Kong want candidates for the legislature to address issues such as housing, education, medical services, environment, and public order, according to a poll by the Hong Kong University Public Opinion Programme. 86.9 per cent of respondents say that it is important that candidates to the Legislative Council focus on livelihood policies.
