(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Many adults in the Great Lake State would vote for Republican Dick DeVos in this year’s gubernatorial election, according to a poll by EPIC/MRA. 48 per cent of respondents would support DeVos, while 40 per cent would back Democratic incumbent Jennifer Granholm.

Granholm—a Democrat—was elected in November 2002, defeating Republican challenger Dick Posthumus with 51 per cent of the vote.

In June 2005, Dick DeVos—former chief executive officer at Alticor and husband of former state Republican chairwoman Betsy DeVos—announced he would seek the Republican gubernatorial nomination.

Support for DeVos increased by two points since May, while backing for Granholm fell by five points.

Earlier this month, a motorcycle accident involving National Football League (NFL) quarterback Ben Roethlisberger fostered debate on helmet laws in the United States. DeVos has pledged to repeal Michigan’s existing legislation, to allow riders over the age of 21 to drive without helmets if they have taken a safety course and have operated a motorcycle for at least two years.

The gubernatorial election is scheduled for Nov. 7. Since 1943, Michigan has had five Republican and four Democratic heads of government.
