(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Incumbent Maria Cantwell could earn a new term as one of Washington’s representatives to the United States Senate, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 44 per cent of respondents in the Evergreen State would vote for the Democrat, while 40 per cent would support Republican challenger Mike McGavick.
Cantwell was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000, defeating incumbent Republican Slade Gorton by just over 2,000 ballots. Cantwell had previously served for one term in the U.S. House of Representatives.
In July 2005, McGavick announced he was stepping down as president and chief executive officer of Safeco to explore a Senate run.
Cantwell will face former Marine Mark Wilson and lawyer Hong Tran in the Democratic primary, which will take place in September. Wilson and Tran have called for the withdrawal of U.S. troops in Iraq.
McGavick commented on the results of the survey, saying, “We’re obviously pleased with the progress that we continue to make, and the trend is as important as anything, and we think that the message of civility and common sense as opposed to what we see in Washington, D.C., these days is taking root.”
Support for Cantwell fell by two points since May, while backing for McGavick dropped by one point.
The election is scheduled for Nov. 7.
