(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Kay Bailey Hutchison could earn a new term as one of the Lone Star State’s representatives to the United States Senate, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 53 per cent of respondents in Texas would support the Republican incumbent, while 34 per cent would support Democratic challenger Barbara Ann Radnofsky.

Hutchison was first elected to the U.S. Senate in a June 1993 special election, and earned six-year terms in 1994 and 2000. In the last election, she defeated Democrat Gene Kelly with 65 per cent of all cast ballots. Hutchison was mentioned as a possible gubernatorial candidate, but decided to seek a third term in the U.S. Senate instead.

Radnofsky, an attorney, is the first Texas woman to receive a Democratic Party’s U.S. Senate nomination. On Jun. 11, Radnofsky criticized Hutchison for describing some aspects of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) leak investigation as “some perjury technicality.”

Yesterday, Hutchison introduced an amendment to the Defense Authorization Bill that seeks to provide financial protection to veterans and active duty service members in the event of identity theft.

The election is scheduled for Nov. 7.
