A study by the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University published in the Star-Ledger gives Menendez a four-point lead over Kean.
In the November 2005 gubernatorial election, Jon Corzine—a Democrat—defeated Republican candidate Doug Forrester with 54 per cent of all cast ballots. Corzine had served as New Jersey’s junior senator since 2001. Menendez will serve out the remaining one year of Corzine’s Senate term.
Last week, the Menendez campaign released a television advertisement where the Democrat highlights his opposition to the Iraq war. In the spot, Menendez declares, “This administration and its allies have taken the wrong position time after time.”
Kean spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker said the Republican candidate “has said that there have been horrendous mistakes made in the conduct of the war, but (…) believes that we should not cut and run.”
The election is scheduled for Nov. 7.
