Nevada Governor: Gibbons 44%, Titus 40%

- Republican Jim Gibbons is holding on to the lead in Nevada’s gubernatorial election, according to the latest poll by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. 44 per cent of respondents in the Silver State would vote for the Democrat, while 40 per cent would support Democrat Dina Titus.

A late October survey by Research 2000 gave Gibbons a six-point edge over Titus.

Kenny Guinn—a Republican—has acted as Nevada’s governor since January 1999. The businessman earned a second consecutive term in the November 2002 election, defeating Democrat Joe Neal with 62 per cent of the vote. Guinn is ineligible for a third term in office.

Gibbons has served in the United States House of Representatives since 1997. He won the Aug. 15 primary with 48.2 per cent of the vote in a contest against state senator Bob Beers, lieutenant governor Lorraine Hunt, actress Melody Damayo, and former postal worker Stanleigh Harold Lusak.

Titus has served as the minority leader in the Nevada Senate since 1993. She won the Aug. 15 primary with 53.8 per cent of the vote in a contest against Henderson mayor Jim Gibson and activist Leola McConnell.

The election is scheduled for Nov. 7. Since 1911, the Silver State has had seven Republican and nine Democratic heads of government.
