Democratic candidate Jerry Brown holds the upper hand in the Golden State as voters get ready to elect their new governor, a new Angus Reid Public Opinion poll has found.

The online survey of a representative sample of 601 registered voters in California also shows that Barbara Boxer would earn a new six-year term in the U.S. Senate, but with a lower percentage of the vote than in her 1998 and 2004 victories.

Governor – Democrat Jerry Brown holds the support of almost half (49%) of absolutely certain voters, followed by Meg Whitman of the Republican Party with 44 per cent.

Two other contenders are in single digits: Laura Wells of the Green Party (2%) and Dale Ogden of the Libertarian Party (2%).

U.S. Senate – Incumbent Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer holds a seven-point lead over Carly Fiorina of the Republican Party among absolutely certain voters (51% to 44%).

Independent Edward Noonan and Green Party candidate Duane Roberts are at one per cent each.

Methodology: From October 28 to October 29, 2010, Angus Reid Public Opinion conducted an online survey among 601 American registered voters in the State of California who are Springboard America panelists. The margin of error—which measures sampling variability—is +/- 4.0%. The results have been statistically weighted according to the most current education, age, gender and region Census data to ensure a representative sample. Discrepancies in or between totals are due to rounding.
