(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Argentinean president Néstor Kirchner remains the favourite candidate for a future election, according to a poll by CEOP. 56 per cent of respondents would support the incumbent head of state if he ran for a second term in office.
Former finance minister Roberto Lavagna is a distant second with 12.5 per cent, followed by Elisa Carri³ of the Alliance Affirmation for an Egalitarian Republic (ARI) with nine per cent, Ricardo L³pez Murphy of Recreate (Recrear) with 5.2 per cent, former president Carlos Menem with 2.4 per cent, Neuquen governor Jorge Sobisch with 2.1 per cent, and Patricia Walsh of United Left (IU) with 1.6 per cent.
Kirchner finished second to former president Carlos Menem in the presidential election held in April 2003. Menem withdrew from the scheduled run-off after voting intention polls suggested an overwhelming victory for Kirchner, candidate of the Front for Victory (FV).
Last month, Mauricio Macri of Commitment for Change (CC) apparently withdrew from the presidential race, declaring, “I’m again running to be mayor because I have a commitment to the inhabitants of the city of Buenos Aires and because I love this city.” Macri lost the 2003 election in Argentina’s capital in a run-off against Anbal Ibarra.
The next presidential election in Argentina is scheduled for Oct. 28. Kirchner is eligible for consecutive re-election, but has not finalized a decision on whether he will seek a new term. His wife and current Buenos Aires senator Cristina Fern¡ndez de Kirchner is also a potential candidate.
