In September 2009, Norwegian voters renewed the Stortinget (the Norwegian Parliament). Final results gave the Red-Green alliance—encompassing Labour, the Socialist Left and the Agrarians—86 of the 169 seats at stake. Labour leader Jens Stoltenberg retained his post as prime minister, becoming the first head of government since Gro Harlem Brutland in 1993 to earn a consecutive term.

Last month, Stoltenberg announced changes to the country’s immigration guidelines, saying, "The immigration law will be changed such that foreigners with children in Norway who had fulfilled the requirements for family reunification cannot be expelled on the grounds of illegal work."

The prime minister’s announcement followed a public outcry over the expulsion of a woman from the Philippines married to a Norwegian man and mother to their Norway-born child. Laila Navrud was asked to leave the country by authorities it was revealed that she had been working without a proper work permit. Laila and her husband Kristian Navrud launched an aggressive media campaign and found a sympathetic public that pushed the government to allow her to stay.
