(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Álvaro Colom has gained some popularity in Guatemala, according to a poll by Vox Latina published in Prensa Libre. 46 per cent of respondents approve of Colom’s performance as president, up three points since January.
Guatemalan voters elected a new president in November 2007. Final results gave Colom of the left-leaning National Union of Hope (UNE) 52.82 per cent of the vote. His run-off contender, Otto Pérez Molina of the right-leaning Patriot Party (PP), finished second with 47.18 per cent of all cast ballots. Colom was sworn in as president in January 2008.
On Jul. 19, Colom complained after Dionisio Gutierrez, a powerful magnate and host of a television program, claimed that the government has done "nothing" so far. The president referred to the country’s business elite, saying, "What do they want? In spite of last year’s financial crisis and the weather crises we have had, Guatemala’s economy grew. To say that we haven’t grown is a shameful untruth."
