In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2008, Democratic nominee Obama secured a majority of electoral votes, defeating Republican contender John McCain. In January 2009, Obama became the first African American president in U.S. history.
On Jun. 27, Obama discussed the situation in North Korea, saying, "Our main focus right now is in the UN Security Council making sure that there is a crystal-clear acknowledgement that North Korea engaged in belligerent behaviour that is unacceptable to the international community. And the United States participated in the investigation that was conducted around the Cheonan. Our experts concluded that North Korea had carried out that attack. That was consistent with South Korea’s assessment and others who were observers in the process."
