(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – The governing Direction-Social Democracy (Smer) is clearly ahead of its rivals as an election in Slovakia draws near, according to a poll by Median SK. 44 per cent of respondents would vote for Smer in next month’s ballot.

The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKU) and the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) are tied for second place with 13.1 per cent, followed by the Slovak National Party (SNS) with seven per cent, and the People’s Party-Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (LS-HZDS) with 6.1 per cent. Support is lower for Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), the Party of the Hungarian Coalition (SMK) and Bridge (Most-Hid).

Slovak voters renewed their legislative branch in June 2006. Final results placed Smer—led by Robert Fico—as the top party in the European country with 50 seats. In July, Fico officially took over as prime minister, in a coalition encompassing Smer, the SNS and the LS-HZDS.

Slovakia entered the euro zone in January 2009. The legislative election is scheduled for Jun. 12.

On Apr. 20, Fico discussed his party’s chances, saying, "We have an ambition to be the most successful ones in the election and form a government with a strong mandate to the political party which we represent."
