Progressive Conservatives Lead in Manitoba

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – The opposition Progressive Conservative Party is ahead of the governing New Democratic Party (NDP) in Manitoba, according to a poll by Angus Reid Public Opinion. 44 per cent of respondents in the Canadian province would vote for the Tories in the next legislative ballot, while 37 per cent would support the NDP.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – The opposition Progressive Conservative Party is ahead of the governing New Democratic Party (NDP) in Manitoba, according to a poll by Angus Reid Public Opinion. 44 per cent of respondents in the Canadian province would vote for the Tories in the next legislative ballot, while 37 per cent would support the NDP.

The Liberal Party is a distant third with 13 per cent, followed by the Green Party with three per cent.

The NDP won 36 of the Legislative Assembly’s 57 seats in the May 2007 election, garnering 48 per cent of the vote. The Progressive Conservatives finished second, with 38 per cent and 19 mandates.

In October 2009, former finance minister Greg Selinger took over as Manitoba’s premier substituting Gary Doer, who became Canada’s ambassador to the United States. Doer served from October 1999 to October 2009, leading the provincial NDP to victories in the elections held in 1999, 2003 and 2007. Hugh McFadyen has been the leader of the Progressive Conservatives since April 2006.

Last month, McFadyen discussed the next provincial campaign, saying, "We’ll make decisions about the focus of the campaign certainly as we go along, but our commitment will be that we govern for all Manitobans."

The next provincial election in Manitoba is scheduled for Oct. 4, 2011.
