(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Most people in France are not backing Nicolas Sarkozy, according to a poll by CSA published in Le Parisien. 55 per cent of respondents have no confidence in the president’s leadership, unchanged since November.

Appointed French prime minister François Fillon also has a negative rating, with 53 per cent saying that they don’t trust him.

In May 2007, Sarkozy, candidate for the centre-right Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) and former interior minister, won the presidential run-off with 53.06 per cent of the vote. Sarkozy appointed Fillon—who had been his adviser and presidential campaign leader—as prime minister.

Earlier this month, first Lady Carla Bruni referred to the possibility of Sarkozy’s re-election, saying, "As a wife, one mandate would be enough for me."

On Dec. 17, Sarkozy addressed his wife’s comments, declaring, "My wife, Carla, is an extremely honest person. (…) She knows very well that such a decision needs to be taken when the time comes, and that will be in 2011. Until then, I have a job to do that is extremely difficult."
