(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Danny Williams is the top-ranked head of government in nine Canadian provinces, according to a poll by Angus Reid Public Opinion. 78 per cent of respondents in Newfoundland and Labrador approve of their premier’s performance.
Saskatchewan premier Brad Wall is second on the list with 58 per cent, followed by Nova Scotia’s Darrell Dexter with 43 per cent, Manitoba’s Greg Selinger with 29 per cent, Quebec’s Jean Charest with 25 per cent, British Columbia’s Gordon Campbell with 21 per cent, and New Brunswick’s Shawn Graham with 20 per cent.
The lowest-ranked premiers in Canada are Ontario’s Dalton McGuinty with 18 per cent, and Alberta’s Ed Stelmach with 14 per cent.
Williams became Newfoundland and Labrador’s premier after his Progressive Conservative party won 34 of the 48 House of Assembly seats at stake in the October 2003 provincial election, ending more than 14 years of rule by the Liberal party. The Newfoundland Tories earned a new term in the October 2007 election, winning 44 seats.
Earlier this month, Williams discussed his views on how Canada should deal with global warming, saying, "It’s important we find a proper balance. I don’t think it’s fair to Alberta, which has carried the freight in this country for a long period of time, to now be in a position, you know, where they’re going to be disadvantaged. The cost of addressing climate change should not come at the expense of Alberta and Saskatchewan.’’
