(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – A third of people in Norway throw their support behind the governing Labour Party (DNA), according to a poll by TNS Gallup released by TV2. 34.6 per cent of respondents would vote for Labour in the next federal election, essentially unchanged since October.

The conservative Progress Party (FrP) is second with 22.7 per cent, followed by the Conservatives (H) with 18.8 per cent. Support is much lower for the Socialist Left (SV), the Agrarians (Sp), the Christian People (KrF), the Liberal Left (V), and the Red (R) party.

On Sept. 14, Norwegian voters renewed the Stortinget (the Norwegian Parliament). Final results gave the Red-Green alliance—encompassing Labour, the Socialist Left and the Agrarians—86 of the 169 seats at stake. Labour leader Jens Stoltenberg retained his post as prime minister, becoming the first head of government since Gro Harlem Brutland in 1993 to earn a consecutive term.

On Nov. 10, Stoltenberg said his government will stop spending beyond the set limits—as it has been doing lately in the face of the global financial crisis—next year, declaring, "The challenge from 2010 and ahead will be to again get spending down towards the four per cent trajectory. (…) I promise that there won’t be tax cuts, but responsible fiscal policies."
