In May 2007, Sarkozy, candidate for the centre-right Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) and former interior minister, won the presidential run-off with 53.06 per cent of the vote. Sarkozy appointed François Fillon—who had been his adviser and presidential campaign leader—as prime minister.
On Aug. 6, Sarkozy called on the country’s banks to disclose their plans for granting employee bonuses, warning that the public could be angered if these do not fall within guidelines agreed upon in a recent international summit. A statement from Sarkozy’s office read: "The president wants to make sure that French banks are following the rules agreed at the London G20, particularly in terms of remuneration."
