(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Israel’s governing party continues to be well regarded by the people, according to a poll by Shvakim Panorama released by Israel Radio. A prospective tally of seats shows that the Likud party would get 29 seats in the next election to the Knesset.
Kadima is second with 23 seats, followed by Israel Our Home (Yisrael Beiteinu) with 16, the International Organization of Torah-observant Sephardic Jews (Shas) with 12, Labour with 10, Yahadut Hatorah (United Torah Judaism) with six, Vitality-Together (Meretz-Yachad) with five, and both Jewish Home (Habayit Hayehudi) and National Union (HaIhud HaLeumi) with four. The Arab parties would get 11 seats in the Knesset.
In February, Israeli voters renewed the Knesset. The Likud party, led by Netanyahu, secured 27 seats in the legislature. The far-right Israel Our Home, the Labour party, Shas, United Torah Judaism, and the Jewish Home joined Likud in a coalition. On Mar. 31, Netanyahu was sworn in as prime minister.
Netanyahu served as prime minister from June 1996 to July 1999, and resigned from Ariel Sharon’s cabinet—where he held the finance portfolio—after opposing the "Disengagement Plan."
On Jul. 15, Shaul Mofaz, a senior lawmaker with Kadima, criticized the budget bill proposed by Netanyahu, saying, "I was looking for hope and a future for the young and the elderly, but all I saw was cutbacks. Cutting taxes will benefit only those with high wages. Indirect taxes will hurt the weaker socioeconomic echelons and for the first time in history, the state’s revenues from indirect taxes will exceed direct tax revenues. This is a shameful legacy."
