Flag, Armed Forces Make Canadians Proud

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – The flag and the armed forces remain key sources of pride for Canadians, according to a poll by Angus Reid Strategies. 86 per cent of respondents are very or moderately proud of the Canadian flag, and 84 per cent feel the same way about their armed forces.

Hockey is third on the list with 72 per cent, followed by multiculturalism with 64 per cent, the state of democracy in Canada also with 64 per cent, the Canadian economy with 58 per cent, the health care system also with 58 per cent, bilingualism with 54 per cent, and Aboriginal culture with 53 per cent.

In addition, 45 per cent of respondents are proud of the Canadian justice system, 42 per cent are proud of the Monarchy, and 37 per cent are proud of Parliament.

In 1867, the British America Act united four British colonies as provinces into the Dominion of Canada. Six more entities on the North American landmass would also go on to join the confederation of Canada, which was granted full autonomy from Britain following the passage of the Statute of Westminster in 1931.

On Jun. 27, Canadian governor-general Michaëlle Jean—the commander-in-chief of the Canadian Armed Forces—presented a new flag to the Canadian Navy, declaring, "It is thanks to you that our country is able to make a vital contribution to all nations, by helping to stave of threats and defuse dangerous situations and by taking part in humanitarian efforts."
