(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – The popularity of French president Nicolas Sarkozy remains well below the 50 per cent mark, according to a poll by CSA published in Le Parisien. 41 per cent of respondents express confidence in Sarkozy to face the country’s problems, up one point since April.

In May 2007, Sarkozy, candidate for the centre-right Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) and former interior minister, won the presidential run-off with 53.06 per cent of the vote. Sarkozy appointed François Fillon—who had been his adviser and presidential campaign leader—as prime minister. 43 per cent of respondents have confidence in Fillon’s leadership.
On May 25, during an official visit to the United Arab Emirates, Sarkozy referred to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, saying, "No one would think seriously about peace in the Middle East without giving the Palestinians a state they have been persevering for years. It is their legitimate right. (…) The best guarantee for security of Israel is setting up an independent, democratic, modern and viable Palestinian state."
