(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – The Democratic Party of Albania (PDSh) and the Socialist Party of Albania (PSSh) are facing an election year with practically the same amount of public support, according to a poll by Zogby International released by Top Channel TV. 38 per cent of respondents would vote for the Democrats in this year’s election, while 36 per cent would back the Socialists.

Support for the Democrats is up two points since March, while backing for the Socialists in down two points.

The Socialist Movement for Integration (LSI) is third with six per cent, followed by the G99 Movement (G99) with two per cent, the Unity for Human Rights Party (PBDNJ) with one per cent, and the Republican Party of Albania (PRSh) also with one per cent.

In July 2005, Albania held a legislative election which was deemed by international observers as having "complied only partially with international commitments and standards for democratic elections." Final results gave the Democrats 56 seats in the legislature, and 42 seats to the Socialists. Democrat Sali Berisha took office as prime minister in September. Under the proportional representation system, ten other parties earned seats in the Assembly of the Republic.

On May 12, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) rejected a petition by Albania’s government to replace Audrey Glover as the head of the group’s electoral observer mission, saying, "If governments were given a role in choosing the observers, this would be the end of objective and impartial election observation."

The next legislative election in Albania is scheduled for Jun. 28.
