(05/15/09) - Norways Labour Has More Decisive Lead
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Norway’s governing Labour Party (DNA) has gained popularity this month, according to a poll by Norstat released by NRK. 34.1 per cent of respondents would vote for Labour in this year’s general election, up 2.4 points since April.

The rightist Progress Party (FrP) is second with 27.7 per cent, followed by the Conservatives (H) with 11.9 per cent, the Socialist Left (SV) with 6.7 per cent, the Christian People (KrF) with 6.5 per cent, the Liberal Left (V) with 5.9 per cent, and the Agrarians (Sp) with 5.8 per cent.
In September 2005, Norwegian voters renewed the Stortinget (the Norwegian Parliament). Final results gave the Red-Green alliance—encompassing Labour, the Socialist Left and the Agrarians—87 seats in the 169-member legislative branch. Labour leader Jens Stoltenberg—who held the highest office from March 2000 to October 2001—took over as prime minister for the second time.
On May 12, Norway was elected as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council. Norwegian foreign minister Jonas Gahr Stoere expressed his satisfaction, saying, "Our work now begins in earnest. During the next three years we will participate actively in the Council. We will take our share of responsibility and work systematically to promote human rights." Other elected members elected include the United States, Belgium and Cuba.
The next legislative election will take place on Sept. 14.
