(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – The majority of people in France continue to express disappointment with the leadership of Nicolas Sarkozy, according to a poll by Ifop published in Paris Match. 57 per cent of respondents disapprove of the president’s performance.
In May 2007, Sarkozy, candidate for the centre-right Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) and former interior minister, won the presidential run-off with 53.06 per cent of the vote. Sarkozy appointed François Fillon—who had been his adviser and presidential campaign leader—as prime minister. 52 per cent of respondents approve of Fillon’s performance, up two points since March.
Earlier this year, the UMP expressed support for a bill seeking to implement a surveillance system that would find individuals downloading material illegally and cut them off from the Internet in order to protect intellectual property.
On Apr. 9, lawmakers in the National Assembly voted down the proposal. Patrick Bloche, a legislator with the Socialist Party (PS), called the bill "dangerous, useless, inefficient, and very risky for us citizens."
