(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Incumbent president Abdelaziz Bouteflika is the clear frontrunner in Algeria’s election, according to a poll published in Ennahar. 71 per cent of respondents would vote for Bouteflika in this month’s ballot.

Secretary general of the Workers’ Party (PT) Louisa Hanoune is a distant second with 9.4 per cent. Support is lower for Moussa Touati of the Algerian National Front (FNA), independent Mohamed Said, Ahd54 party leader Rebaïne Fawzi Ali, and Djahid Younsi of the Movement for National Reform.

The presidential election is scheduled for Apr. 9. Bouteflika—who has been in office since April 1999—was cleared to run for a third consecutive term in office after legislators approved a constitutional revision. Bouteflika’s bid is backed by the National Liberation Front (FLN) and the National Rally for Democracy (RND).

On Apr. 6, Rebaïne expressed disappointment with the process, claiming that "finances and the media" are implemented in favour of the incumbent president, and adding, "I am a true opposition to the regime and I do not believe in the empty chair policy."
