(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Supporters of the Republican Party in the United States have two main choices as they ponder their presidential nominee for 2012, according to a poll by Opinion Research Corporation released by CNN. 29 per cent of respondents would support Alaska governor Sarah Palin, while 26 per cent would back former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee.

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney is third with 21 per cent, followed by Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal with nine per cent.

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2008, Democratic nominee Barack Obama secured a majority of electoral votes, defeating Republican candidate John McCain. In January, Obama became the first African American president in U.S. history.

In 2008, Palin was McCain’s running mate in the Republican ticket. Huckabee and Romney launched presidential campaigns, but dropped out of the race as McCain became the clear frontrunner.

Last month, Romney criticized the current administration’s economic policies, saying, "America voted for change. America did not vote for a boat-load of new government spending programs that would guarantee higher taxes and high deficits as far as the eye can see and that would threaten our currency, our economy, and our future. We must be the alternative course."
