(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Adults in the United States are satisfied with their proposed new federal cabinet, according to a poll by Opinion Research Corporation released by CNN. 75 per cent of respondents approve of U.S. president-elect Barack Obama’s appointments so far.

In addition, 71 per cent approve of Obama’s nomination of Hillary Rodham Clinton as the new U.S. state secretary.

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. On Nov. 4, Democratic nominee Obama secured a majority of electoral votes, defeating Republican candidate John McCain. Obama will become the first African American president in U.S. history when he takes over from George W. Bush—who served two four-year terms—on Jan. 20, 2009.

On Dec. 1, Obama announced his national security team, featuring Rodham Clinton as state secretary, Robert Gates as defence secretary, and retired general James Jones as national security advisor. The president-elect declared: "[Rodham Clinton] is an American of tremendous stature who will have my complete confidence. Hillary’s appointment is a sign to friend and foe of the seriousness of my commitment to renew American diplomacy and restore our alliances."
